How title case works

Title case capitalizes the first letter of major words while keeping minor words like articles, prepositions, and conjunctions in lowercase. The exact rules vary by style guide, which is why this tool supports four major styles: APA, Chicago Manual of Style, AP, and MLA.

Each style guide handles edge cases differently. APA and AP both capitalize words of four or more letters, while Chicago and MLA lowercase all prepositions regardless of length. Acronyms like NASA and HIPAA stay in all-caps across every style. Words after colons are always capitalized.

When should I use title case?

Title case is standard for headlines, article titles, book titles, email subject lines, and presentation slide headings. Using consistent title case makes your content look polished and professional.

Which style should I choose?

Use APA for academic and research writing. Chicago for books and publishing. AP for journalism and news. MLA for humanities papers. When in doubt, APA is the most widely recognized default.
