Why word count matters

Word count is more than a number. It shapes how readers engage with your content, how search engines rank it, and whether your message lands. Blog posts under 300 words rarely rank. Emails over 200 words lose attention. Social posts have strict character limits. Knowing your count helps you write to fit the medium.

Readability scores add another dimension. The Flesch-Kincaid grade level tells you what education level a reader needs to understand your text. Most marketing content should target grade 7-9. Academic papers land at 12+. If your score is higher than your audience expects, your message won't land.

What is Flesch-Kincaid grade level?

It estimates the US school grade needed to understand your text, based on average sentence length and syllable count per word. Grade 6 means a sixth grader can read it. Grade 12 means college-level. Lower is usually better for web content.

How accurate is the reading time estimate?

We use 200 words per minute, which is the average adult reading speed for non-fiction. Actual reading time varies by complexity and reader skill, but 200 WPM is the standard used by Medium and most publishing platforms.
